Swiss village buried by avalanche, certainly one person missing

The Swiss village of Blatten was hit by an avalanche on Wednesday. At least one person is missing. The stream of ice, mud, and stones has destroyed several houses. The village had previously been evacuated due to a broken mountaintop.

One person is missing, local authorities told news agency Reuters. That person may be under the rubble that has come down.

The Swiss medium Der Bund writes that several houses have been destroyed. It is not clear how many houses are involved. According to local authorities, “an unimaginable amount of material has plunged into the valley with a thundering noise.” A large part of the mountain village is buried.

Earlier this month, three hundred residents of Blatten and cows were evacuated because a large piece of the Birch Glacier had broken off. It concerned rock of 1.5 million cubic meters.

More rock may come down. Earlier Der Bund wrote that there was “acute danger of a major landslide”.
