Arne Slot has cancelled his attendance to the annual coaches’ gala of the coaches union on Tuesday night in solidarity with the victims of the tragedy in Liverpool. A driver drove through a crowd during the celebration of the national champion on Monday night, resulting in dozens of injuries.
According to Liverpool, more than fifty people have been treated in the hospital, and eleven people are still under medical treatment. The driver, a 53-year-old white man from Liverpool, is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence. His motive is still unclear.
Slot was actually supposed to be at a coaches’ gala in London on Tuesday night, where he would be named Coach of the Year by his colleagues. Due to the tragedy, he cancelled, the LMA coaches union said in a statement.
“As you know, a shocking incident took place in Liverpool on Monday, in which dozens of men, women, and children were injured. In solidarity with all those affected, I have withdrawn. This is not a frivolous decision, but I think it is absolutely right given the seriousness of the situation.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wider football community for the support we have received over the past 24 hours. Football is and should always be a sport based on rivalry, but it is also a great source of camaraderie, especially in these times.”
Slot: ‘Honored with election’
Slot also praised the emergency services and authorities in Liverpool. “But in addition to the supporters and bystanders who helped each other in need, I think everyone involved in the aftermath deserves our gratitude.”
In the statement, Slot briefly touched on the election of Coach of the Year. He was supposed to receive the associated trophy from Manchester United icon Alex Ferguson. It is not clear if that will still happen.
“I am honored,” writes Slot. “It is special to be chosen by your colleagues, especially because I know the incredible quality of those who have won this award before. Sir Alex, I look forward to receiving the trophy from you.”
