Clothing chain Gerry Weber makes restart in slimmed shape

The bankrupt women’s clothing chain Gerry Weber is making a fresh start in the Netherlands in a significantly slimmed-down form. Stores with women’s fashion from the German brand will remain in at least eight locations in the country. At least 30 of the original 175 employees will continue to work there.

In a statement, the trustees report that the Spanish Victrix Group, known for the Punt Roma brand, is continuing the Gerry Weber chain. For the Dutch market, the Victrix Group is entering into a partnership with the Naura Group. That company, known for Van Uffelen, Claudia Sträter, and Expresso, will run the Dutch stores.

Currently, those branches are still closed. The branches that are restarting are expected to reopen soon. The trustees are still investigating whether the activities in the other stores can also be continued.

Gerry Weber was declared bankrupt last month by the Amsterdam court. At that time, the chain still had 38 branches in the Netherlands.

It had previously been announced that the German brand, which is active in many countries, was in financial trouble. According to the chain, there were several bankruptcy proceedings in Germany concerning the parent company and subsidiaries. Gerry Weber has also been reorganized internationally several times in recent years.

According to a statement from Thursday, the new Spanish owner still sees a future for the Gerry Weber brand. “In addition to the brand rights, they have also taken over a number of designers who are responsible for Gerry Weber’s clothing. The spring and summer collection of this year will also soon be available again in the aforementioned stores.”
