João Almeida won the Tour de Suisse on Sunday. The Portuguese rider achieved a double victory in the final uphill time trial and secured his team UAE Team Emirates’ fiftieth victory of the season.
In the 10-kilometer time trial from Beckenried to Stockhütte, Almeida finished 25 seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall. Briton Oscar Onley finished third, more than a minute behind.
In the general classification, Almeida displaced Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin from the top spot. Vauquelin finished fourth in the time trial, one minute and forty seconds behind, and ended up second in the overall standings, more than a minute behind.
Almeida, who recorded his third stage victory in Switzerland, won his third WorldTour stage race of the year. He previously won the overall victory in the Tour de Romandie and the Tour of the Basque Country. The Portuguese rider is preparing for the Tour de France, which starts on July 5.
There was also success for UAE Team Emirates in the Tour of Belgium, where Italian Filippo Baroncini took the overall victory for the team from the United Arab Emirates. Tim Wellens sprinted to his second victory of the week in the final stage.
UAE Team Emirates, Tadej Pogacar’s team, is dominant this season with fifty victories. Lidl-Trek is in second place on the list of victories per team with 25 wins.
