Carlos Alcaraz won Queen’s for the second time on Sunday. The Spaniard defeated Czech Jiri Lehecka in the final: 7-5, 6-7 (5) and 6-2. Alexander Bublik and Markéta Vondrousová also won in the run-up to Wimbledon.
Alcaraz showed on the grass in London again that he is almost unstoppable at the moment. He did have to concede the second set to Lehecka after a tiebreak, but was then in a class of his own in the third set.
“I am very happy to be able to lift this trophy again,” Alcaraz said afterwards. “I have to say that Jiri has had an excellent week. His level is very high. Actually, it is always a nightmare to play against him.”
Queen’s was Alcaraz’s first tournament since he won Roland Garros two weeks ago. At Wimbledon, the next Grand Slam tournament, he will defend his title from June 30.
Bublik defeats Medvedev in Halle
Earlier in the day, Bublik won the Halle grass tournament. The 27-year-old Kazakh defeated third-seeded Daniil Medvedev from Russia in the final in two sets: 6-3 and 7-6 (4).
It was Bublik’s fifth ATP title of his career. He also won the tournament in Halle in 2023. Earlier this year, Bublik won a challenger on clay in Turin.
In Germany, Markéta Vondrousová also enjoyed success in the run-up to Wimbledon, winning the WTA tournament in Berlin. The Czech defeated Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu in the final with 7-6 (10), 4-6 and 6-2.
Vondrousová surprisingly won on the grass of Wimbledon two years ago as an unseeded player. Due to injuries, she fell back to 164th place in the world ranking. Thanks to the victory in Berlin, she is still traveling to London with confidence.
