Daniƫlle van de Donk will play football in England again after four years with Olympique Lyonnais. The 33-year-old midfielder for the Orange Lionesses is continuing her career with London City Lionesses.
Van de Donk signed for two seasons with the club founded in 2019, which will debut in the English Women’s Super League next season. Between 2015 and 2021, the Brabant native already played in London for Arsenal.
The 167-time Netherlands international calls her new club “a great environment” and is looking forward to her return to the English capital. “This club reminds me of a small family and I would like to be part of it.”
“I have already played in the English competition for six seasons. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I had no hesitation in returning. It is a high-quality competition and the stadiums are often full. Hopefully, we can attract more audiences here as well.”
London City Lionesses director Ronald Thompson is happy that Van de Donk has chosen his club. “She has great technique and meets everything you would expect from a player at her level. She is also a great person.”
Van de Donk is currently preparing with the Orange Lionesses for the European Championship in Switzerland. That will be her eighth final tournament, after the European Championships of 2013, 2017 and 2022, the World Cups of 2015, 2019 and 2023 and the Olympic Games of 2021.
