Univé has observed an increasing number of young people committing fraud when taking out moped insurance. They lower the premium by taking out the insurance in the name of an older person.
Young drivers typically pay higher premiums because they cause more damage. Older, more experienced drivers receive lower premiums. Due to the decrease in premium income, Univé had to increase rates for everyone.
Research by the insurer shows that the number of policies in the name of someone else is steadily increasing. In 2025, it already concerns more than one in five applications.
Comparing premiums is also becoming increasingly popular, especially among sixteen-year-olds. In 2024, 40 percent of them requested a proposal from Univé, and then took out moped insurance in the name of an older person.
Univé is therefore taking stricter action and only compensates damage if the policyholder was riding the moped. “If young drivers are not registered and still cause damage, that damage will not be compensated,” says director Monique Anbergen of Univé Schade. “The financial consequences can then be significantly greater than the previously saved premium.”
Univé previously applied a deductible of 1,000 euros for damage caused by young drivers who were not the policyholder.
