UMCG ceases operations at heart defects: 'correct circumstances are missing'

The University Hospital in Groningen (UMCG) will stop operating people with a congenital heart defect for the time being. According to the hospital, the right circumstances are currently missing, but that is not explained further.

The planned operations are deleted until the end of the year at the latest. Patients can go to Utrecht, Leiden, Amsterdam and Rotterdam for the time being.

The hospital reports on Monday that two employees have expressed “about social safety and quality of care and science”. The UMCG does not explain that further.

In a statement, the CEO of the UMCG, Ate van der Zee, says: “High -complex operations must take place under the best possible conditions. At the moment they are not fully present. That is why we have decided to stop the planned operations temporarily.”

Appointments of heart patients at the outpatient clinic will continue as usual, just like acute care and interventions for which people do not have to be operated on, such as heart catheterizations. Heart operations for adults without congenital heart defect also continue.

Appointments for heart patients at the outpatient clinic will continuous as usual, as will acute care and procedures for which people do not need to be operated on, such as cardiac catheterizations. Heart Operations for Adults Without Congenital Heart defects will also continuously.
