Trump explains considerable import tax against EU with more than a month

The U.S. President Donald Trump is postponing the announced import tariffs for the European Union until July 9. This period is intended for further negotiations. On Friday, Trump threatened a general import tariff of 50 percent per June 1.

Trump told reporters on Sunday that he had accepted the EU’s request for postponement. He added that the negotiators will be back at the table soon.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen speaks of “a good conversation” with Trump on X. According to her, the time until July 9 is needed to reach a good deal.

Negotiations on import tariffs are progressing with difficulty. On Saturday, the EU asked the American president for “more respect”.

The EU is one of the most important trading partners of the United States. Last year, exports from the EU to the US were worth around 500 billion euros. It mainly concerns pharmaceutical products, cars, car parts, chemicals and aircraft.

Trump has started trade wars with almost all of the US’s trading partners. He is convinced that import tariffs will help the American manufacturing industry.
