Three red cards were handed out on Monday evening during Boca Juniors-Benfica at the Club World Cup. The heated match in Miami ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to an assist from former Feyenoord player Orkun Kökçü.
Boca Juniors was leading 2-0 when Benfica was awarded a penalty on the stroke of halftime after a foul on Nicolás Otamendi. The injured Ander Herrera was furious with the referee, resulting in a red card for the Boca player. Ángel Di María converted the penalty.
After halftime, a player from both teams was sent off. Benfica attacker Andrea Belotti received a red card after going into a challenge with his leg too high and hitting his opponent’s head. Boca defender Jorge Figal was sent off in the final minutes after a charge.
Benfica had just leveled the score in an outnumbered situation. Otamendi headed in a corner from substitute Kökçü, forcing both teams to settle for a point. Bayern Munich leads Group C after a 10-0 victory over Auckland City.
Flamengo later won 2-0 against Espérance de Tunis. The Brazilian club shares the lead in Group D with Chelsea. The Londoners won with the same score against Los Angeles FC.
