The police arrested three people on Wednesday after the discovery of explosive material in a car in Utrecht a day earlier. At least 130 residents of two apartment buildings in the area had to leave their homes temporarily as a result.
The police closed the Beneluxlaan and Europaplein in Utrecht. After the apartments were evacuated, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service Defence (EOD) investigated and secured the explosive substances.
Around 2:30 a.m., residents were allowed to return home. They were received by the municipality. One of the apartments was completely evacuated, the other partially.
The police are still investigating the car with explosive material. It is unclear what substances are involved. Images from RTV Utrecht show white jerrycans in a black SUV. Local residents say that the police had first chased the car on Tuesday evening.
