Tobias Johannessen will continue in the Tour de France despite his scare on Mont Ventoux on Tuesday. The Norwegian has been declared fit by the doctors. After the sixteenth stage, Johannessen lost consciousness and was given oxygen.
Johannessen already felt better after a few minutes on Tuesday, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. There he underwent blood tests and an echo, X-rays, and heart films were made. According to his team, these showed no abnormalities.
“Tobias feels good and starts the seventeenth stage today,” his team Uno-X Mobility reports. “Tobias and the team would like to thank everyone who ensured that he was in good hands after the stage.”
The investigations show that the 25-year-old Johannessen suffered from severe stomach cramps in the final kilometers. After the finish, he was given oxygen and a saline solution according to the protocols.
“All necessary protocols were followed after the finish, which made the situation seem more serious than it was at that time,” writes Uno-X Mobility. “He has been given permission to continue.”
Johannessen is having a good Tour de France. He is in eighth place in the general classification. In the stage to Mont Ventoux, he finished 28th, more than five minutes behind stage winner Valentin Paret-Peintre.
