The Tour in Figures: Fastest edition ever, Pogacar one final victory removed from Record

Fastest edition of all time

Pogacar broke a deep sigh on Saturday after the penultimate ride. Again it had been a tough day on the bike, like almost the entire Tour. “Every year we say it is the toughest tour of all time, but this tour was of a different level. Maybe we took it one day quieter.”

The figures prove it right from Pogacar. With an average speed of 43.39 kilometers per hour, it was the fastest edition of all time in the history of the Tour de France. Final winner Pogacar covered 3,298.60 kilometers in 76 hours and 32 seconds.

The old record was 42.03 kilometers per hour and was in the hands of Jonas Vingegaard (2022). However, a comment can be placed with the new Pogacar record. Due to the rain, the Tour organization on Sunday in the final ride decided to stop the time recording before the first climb of the Montmartre in Paris. That was 47 kilometers from the finish.

That had no major influence: Pogacar had broken the record anyway. This is partly due to Mathieu van der Poel, who, thanks to an attack of 173 kilometers in the ninth stage, took care of the second fastest Tour ride of all time (on average 50.013 kilometers per hour).

Pogacar has record in sight

With his fourth overall victory in the Tour de France, Pogacar is by far the best rider of this generation. If he once again wins the largest cycling race in the world, he will come in a row with the best riders of all time.

Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel IndurĂ¡in all won the Tour five times and are therefore record holder. Lance Armstrong was the best in the Tour seven times, but his Tour victories were all deleted from the books after being found guilty of doping.

The 26-year-old Pogacar is well on its way to catch the record, because he is the youngest rider of all time with four final victories in the Tour de France. According to Merckx, it is a matter of time until Pogacar starts to drive him out of the books.

“Number five is for next year,” says the Belgian cycling legend on Monday in the Belgian newspaper HLN . “And then six, seven … There was never a fight, hey. It was a total walk-over. Tadej is the best, the most complete of all. That made this tour clear. Nobody can threaten him.”

Nevertheless, after the spectacular final ride through Paris, Pogacar surprisingly left in the middle whether he will go on record hunting next year. “I can’t do this forever. Whether this was my last tour? You never know.”
