Last year, the Dutch settled for 198 billion euros with their debit card or credit card. That is an increase of 15 percent compared to two years ago, reports De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) on Friday.
In total, the Dutch paid 6.7 billion times last year with a debit card or credit card for the total amount of 198 billion euros. In 2022 it was still 5.9 billion card payments worth 172 billion euros.
People spend the most money with their card at the counter. With Dutch cards, 6.4 billion map payments were made last year at a cash register in the Netherlands or abroad.
But online map payments are on the rise. For example, it concerns purchases at web shops with a payment card or credit card, payments for streaming subscriptions, or transactions where you use a digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. The use of iDEAL is not included.
DNB sees that of the 306 million online card payments last year, the majority, around 230 million, was done with a credit card. But the popularity of payment cards for online payment is increasing and, according to DNB, has tripled between 2022 and 2024.
“The increased popularity of specific payment cards for online purchases may be explained by using digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay,” explains DNB. “These services are linked to a payment card and can be used for online payments in, for example, apps and web shops.”
