A supporter died on Sunday evening during the Nations League final in Munich. The man from Bavaria fell from an upper tier during the extension of the match between Spain and Portugal.
According to the German police, the spectator fell about eight meters. He ended up in the press box on the bottom ring. The cause of the incident is still unknown, but there are no indications of intent or crime.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene but could no longer save the man. He died shortly after the incident, writes ESPN.
The coaches of Portugal and Spain expressed their condolences after the match. Spanish national coach Luis de la Fuente began his press conference with condolences to the relatives. He said that “it reminds us what is important in life. Portuguese national coach Roberto MartÃnez called it “a very sad message”.
The Nations League final ended in a 2-2 draw. Portugal eventually defeated European champion Spain after penalties. It is the second time that Portugal has won the Nations League.
