Spain must prepare for extreme heat, especially inland. In the second half of this week, temperatures could rise to around 40 degrees Celsius.
Spain has had a relatively cool and wet period. But according to weather service AEMET, that is now definitively over. On Monday, the mercury rose to 38 degrees Celsius in the Guadalquivir Valley, the area between Seville and Córdoba. In the Guadianavalley, located slightly further north, it was around 36 degrees Celsius. The temperature will also reach these maximums on Tuesday.
From Wednesday, southwestern Spain will face the supply of warm wind from North Africa. This will cause even higher temperatures, AEMET warns. This applies in particular to Thursday and Friday: then the temperature will rise locally to 40 degrees Celsius.
This makes it about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius warmer than usual for the time of year. The minimum temperature will also rise considerably. In many places, it will cool down to a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius. Only the north of the Galicia region escapes the dance.
AEMET established a number of years ago that it is getting warmer earlier and earlier in Spain. As a result, spring increasingly feels like summer.
