Song Heung-min has decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur after ten years. The 32-year-old figurehead of the London club announced the news at an emotional press conference.
The South Korean made the announcement at a press conference in his home country. Spurs will play an exhibition match against league rival Newcastle United there on Sunday. It will be Son’s last match in a Spurs shirt.
“I have decided to leave the club this summer, in a respectful manner. The club will help me with that. I have done my best, but I need a fresh start,” Son said at a press conference leading up to the match.
The attacker, who came over from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, then couldn’t keep it dry. “This is the most difficult decision of my life. I came to North London as a boy. I leave as a man.”
In his ten years at Spurs, Son grew into a club icon. He played 454 games for the club, in which he was accurate no less than 173 times. The South Korean won his only prize with Spurs last season with the Europa League.
Son already played less last year. By leaving the club, he would like to remain in the picture for the South Korean team, with a view to the World Cup next year. He has been linked with a move to Los Angeles FC from Major League Soccer.
