Kjell Scherpen has completed his transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion to Union St. Gilloise on Thursday. The goalkeeper has signed a contract with the Belgian champion until mid-2028, with an option for another year.
The transfer of Scherpen reportedly involves around 4 million euros. The 25-year-old goalkeeper can prepare for Champions League football, as Union became national champion last season.
Scherpen began his career at FC Emmen and transferred to Ajax in 2019. The 2.06 meter tall goalkeeper transferred to Brighton two years later, but was unable to impress in England.
Brighton successively loaned Scherpen to KV Oostende, Vitesse and Sturm Graz. The Drenthe native became national champion twice in Austria. He was voted best goalkeeper of the competition last season.
Scherpen’s good performances in Austria caught the eye of national coach Ronald Koeman. The goalkeeper made his return to the Orange squad last month in two World Cup qualifying matches. Scherpen has not yet debuted for Orange.
