Dua Lipa, a British singer with Kosovar roots, was granted Kosovar citizenship during a visit to the capital, Pristina. President Vjosa Osmani thanked Dua Lipa for “everything she has meant for Kosovo.”
The pop star was in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, for the Sunny Hill Festival. She organizes that event together with her father. Dua Lipa was the headliner there on Friday. She had previously founded a foundation of the same name to help vulnerable communities in Kosovo.
Between the ages of eleven and fifteen, Dua Lipa, who was born in London, lived in Kosovo. Her Kosovar-Albanian parents returned to the Balkan country during that period after it declared independence from Serbia. Dua Lipa also has Albanian nationality.
“Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the biggest stages in the world to the hearts of millions, she has carried our story with strength, pride and grace,” President Osmani wrote in a message on X. She called the singer “Kosovo’s diamond,” and welcomed her home.
Kosovo is recognized as an independent country by 116 UN member states. Five EU member states do not recognize Kosovo as a country: Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain.
Dua Lipa is one of the most popular artists of the moment. The singer of ‘Levitating’ and ‘Cold Heart’, among others, has received seven Brit Awards and three Grammy Awards for her work. In June, she performed at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. There she sang a cover of the song ‘Bloed, zweet en tranen’.
