Pérez sees unrest at Red Bull: 'I know they are sorry about my departure'

Sergio Pérez claims that Red Bull regrets his departure from Formula 1. The Mexican, who is eager to return to the premier class of motorsport, does not think the Austrian team needs to apologize.

Pérez extended his expiring contract with Red Bull early last year, while his performance was already lagging behind that of teammate Max Verstappen. The six-time race winner was replaced after the season by Liam Lawson, who in turn had to make way for Yuki Tsunoda after two races.

“Do I demand an apology from Red Bull? No, because that’s just how the sport works,” says the 35-year-old Pérez in the podcast Desde el Paddock. “They made certain decisions because of the enormous pressure. A pressure they partly created themselves.”

“I had just signed a contract in Monaco, but from the very next race my future was immediately discussed. It would have been easy for Red Bull to protect me and point to the two-year contract. But that didn’t happen.”

Like Lawson, Tsunoda is not performing well in the shadow of four-time world champion Verstappen. “I know that deep down Red Bull regrets my departure,” says Pérez. “I have that from a very reliable source. I have very good friends at Red Bull.”

Pérez eager to return to Formula 1

Pérez emphasizes that he does not enjoy the current situation at Red Bull. He especially praises Verstappen’s class. “The truth is that Max deserves all the success that comes his way. He is a great driver. Few people understand how he works. He is exceptional.”

The Mexican hopes to return to Formula 1. He has held talks with Cadillac, which will enter the premier class in 2026. “Yes, I want to return if the right project presents itself where I feel at home,” says Pérez.

“I don’t want to travel around the world as a reserve driver and constantly just hope for a small chance. But indeed, I would like to be active in Formula 1 again. I don’t want my career to end this way.”
