Olympic champion Novak Djokovic has surprisingly indicated that he is aiming to participate in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The 38-year-old Serbian says he values participating in the Games more than Grand Slams.
Djokovic has recently hinted at the end of his impressive tennis career, as he is performing less well than before. Since his Olympic title in August 2024 in Paris, he has only won one tournament.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion suggested earlier this month after his lost semi-final against Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros that he might stop soon. “If this was my farewell match in Paris, it was great,” he said.
Djokovic said in a conversation with football coach Slaven Bilic on the YouTube channel Neuspjehprvaka that he would like to be active in six editions of the Games. At his Olympic debut in 2008 in Beijing, the Serbian won bronze in the singles.
“The only thing I have in mind professionally at the moment is the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. That still motivates me,” said Djokovic. “And playing for the national team and at Grand Slams. But actually not even the Grand Slams. Not as much as the Games.”
Djokovic became Olympic champion for the first time in Paris. It was the prize that was still missing from his impressive honours list. Andy Murray is the only male tennis player who successfully defended his Olympic title. He won gold in 2012 and 2016.
