Sportkoepel NOC*NSF is niet blij met de inmenging van de politiek in de discussie over de toelating van trans personen tot de topsport in de Verenigde Staten. Het Amerikaans Nationaal Olympisch Comité (USOPC) wil trans vrouwen weren uit vrouwensporten.
“Het besluit van het Amerikaanse NOC lijkt ingegeven door de huidige politieke koers van de Amerikaanse regering onder president Donald Trump, die op verschillende niveaus beperkende maatregelen heeft opgelegd over de deelname van trans personen”, zegt het NOC*NSF.
De sportkoepel betreurt “deze vermenging van politiek met het feitelijke, op onderzoek gebaseerde gesprek over eerlijke competitie”. Het NOC*NSF wijst op de schadelijke en polariserende effecten daarvan.
De toelating van trans personen tot internationale topsport is volgens het NOC*NSF primair een zaak van de internationale sportfederaties en het internationaal olympisch comité (IOC). Die maken regels op basis van sportwetenschappelijke en biologische criteria.
NOC*NSF wijst erop dat de toelatingseisen voor de Olympische Spelen van 2028 in Los Angeles worden vastgesteld door het IOC. “Onder voorzitterschap van Kirsty Coventry blijft het IOC uitgaan van sportinhoudelijke overwegingen”, zegt de sportkoepel. Coventry liet eerder al weten geen voorstander te zijn van de deelname van trans vrouwen in de vrouwentopsport.
De Nederlandse sportkoepel onderstreept in de breedtesport onverminderd voor deelname van iedereen te staan. Ook komt NOC*NSF later in het jaar op basis van lopend onderzoek met een topsporthandreiking.
Sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF is not happy with the interference of politics in the discussion about the admission of trans people to elite sports in the United States. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) wants to ban trans women from women’s sports.
“The decision of the American NOC seems to be prompted by the current political course of the American government under President Donald Trump, who has imposed restrictive measures on the participation of trans people at various levels,” says NOC*NSF.
The sports umbrella organization regrets “this mixing of politics with the factual, research-based discussion about fair competition”. The NOC*NSF points to the harmful and polarizing effects of this.
The admission of trans people to international elite sports is, according to NOC*NSF, primarily a matter for the international sports federations and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They make rules based on sports scientific and biological criteria.
NOC*NSF points out that the admission requirements for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles are determined by the IOC. “Under the chairmanship of Kirsty Coventry, the IOC continues to base its decisions on sports content considerations,” says the sports umbrella organization. Coventry had previously stated that she was not in favor of the participation of trans women in women’s elite sports.
The Dutch sports umbrella organization emphasizes that it continues to support the participation of everyone in grassroots sports. NOC*NSF will also come up with a top sports guide later in the year based on ongoing research.
