The municipality of Utrecht will report a “handful” people who used violence last week in disrupting the council meeting. Mayor Sharon Dijksma writes that on behalf of the Mayor and Aldermen to the city council.
The last council meeting for the summer recess in Utrecht was disrupted last Thursday by Pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The city council had rejected a motion that called for the boycott of Israeli products and institutions.
The demonstrators tried to prevent Dijksma and council members to enter the council chamber. “A few used violence,” says the Utrecht mayor. A declaration is made against these persons.
Dijksma did not want to call in the police immediately on the evening, and decided to walk outside with the protesters. Outside the mayor still wanted to talk to the demonstrators, but the atmosphere became grim.
Dijksma ran back, but people stood in front of the fence. When security guards and two agents wanted to remove them, push and pull started. The mayor himself remained unharmed, but the security guards did get a few blows. People also tried to get to Dijksma, but she was quickly put in a car.
