Motorist drives in on partying football fans Liverpool

A motorist drove into a crowd in the English city of Liverpool on Monday evening. Tens of thousands of soccer fans are celebrating Liverpool’s national title there.

A police spokesperson says that around 7:00 PM (Dutch time) a report came in about a “traffic collision” with “a number of pedestrians.”

It is not yet clear how many people have been injured and what their condition is. Emergency services are present and the site of the incident, Water Street, has been cordoned off.

The driver of the car has been arrested on the spot. It concerns a 53-year-old British man who lives near Liverpool, Sky News reports based on the police. It is not yet known whether it was a deliberate act or an accident.

“The scenes in Liverpool are horrific. My thoughts are with all the injured and affected,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacts on X. He also thanks the police and emergency services for their “rapid response.”

Starmer says he is being kept informed of developments and asks bystanders to give the police space so they can investigate.

Liverpool players drove through the city in an open bus

Liverpool was driven through the city in an open bus to celebrate the national championship. The club secured the title four weeks ago, but the ceremony was postponed until after the last league match, which took place on Sunday.

Arne Slot has been Liverpool’s coach since last season. The Dutch players Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo also play for the club.
