There is more traffic on the Dutch roads on Sunday than usual. This is mainly due to holidaymakers who were away for a few days during the Ascension weekend and are now returning. Accidents and roadworks are also causing extra delays.
ANWB and Rijkswaterstaat report that with over 300 kilometers of traffic jams, it is much busier than usual on a Sunday. The ANWB was already anticipating a busy day due to returning holidaymakers.
Among other places, the Afsluitdijk is busier than usual. This is an important route for many people to Friesland and Groningen, where the ferry services to most of the Wadden Islands are also located. In the direction from Friesland to North Holland, the delay is over 20 minutes.
It is also extra busy on the road to and from Den Helder, where the boat to Texel departs.
In addition, the ANWB sees that it is busy on the Zeeland roads. On the A58 from Vlissingen to Bergen op Zoom, there was about 15 kilometers of traffic jam at the beginning of the afternoon, causing forty minutes of delay. On the N59 from Burgh-Haamstede, road users are experiencing delays between Ouwerkerk and the Grevelingendam due to recovery work after an accident.
In some places, accidents and roadworks make the crowds even worse. It is busy on the A73 near Nijmegen, where an accident has occurred and work is being carried out. The delay is increasing there.
Work is also taking place on the A2 from the Belgian border to Eindhoven and on the A27 near Utrecht. In total, there are about seventy traffic jams in the country around 2:30 PM.
From 3:00 PM it will probably be quieter and the delay will decrease in most places.
