The twenty-year-old man who escaped from a French prison last week by hiding in a bag is back in custody. French authorities reported this on Monday.
The escaped prisoner was arrested around 6:00 AM on Monday morning when he emerged from a basement in the Lyon area, according to French media outlet BFM Lyon. A criminal gang was likely involved in his escape.
The man’s escape from the prison in Corbas, southwest of Lyon, was noticed on Saturday. He had left the prison unnoticed a day earlier by hiding in the luggage of a released prisoner.
The man was serving multiple prison sentences. And there are ongoing investigations in other cases, including in connection with organized crime.
The prison in Corbas was already in the news in May because it was reportedly overcrowded. On May 1, there were almost 1,218 people, while the prison actually only has space for 678 people. That equates to an occupancy rate of almost 180 percent.
