Defense wants to convert old NS trains into mobile hospitals

Defense wants to buy 24 old train wagons from the Dutch Railways to convert them into mobile hospitals. The wagons must be used to take care of and transport wounded soldiers.

The conversations between Defense and the Dutch Railways are still an early stage, a spokesperson for the Dutch Railways confirms to NU.nl after previous reporting by the AD . The spokesperson therefore cannot give details yet.

The Dutch Railways are now phasing out hundreds of intercity trains as in the photo above this article. They have been driving since the 1980s.

The Intercity’s drove on many domestic processes and were drawn by the characteristic yellow locomotives. They were also used in the Benelux service between Amsterdam and Brussels and the Ardennes Express that drove to Luxembourg until the end of the 1990s. The last train sets are now being used between The Hague and Eindhoven.
