A man tried to demolish a building in Venlo on Monday evening because of a beeping smoke detector. The man works for the contractor responsible for the demolition of the site, but the police still spoke to him.
The smoke detector caused hours of annoyance in the area around the construction site on Craneveldstraat in Venlo with its beeping sound. The police received a report around 10:30 PM that a man had climbed into a crane and was demolishing the building.
Officers who came to investigate indeed found a person in “neat clothing” operating the crane. He turned out to be working for the contractor, but had climbed into the crane on his own initiative.
The man was not arrested. According to the police, “the good man only had good intentions”. The officers could also imagine that the neighborhood was bothered by the annoying beeping. Nevertheless, the officers asked the man to stop the late demolition work.
The smoke detector did not succumb to the debris during the partial demolition of the building. Even after the man’s late demolition work, the detector continued to beep. According to the police, the neighborhood had to “beep out the night”.
