A 68-year-old man from Medemblik, North Holland, assaulted an officer around midnight on Saturday after being stopped for cycling without lights. The man was arrested and is suspected of, among other things, assaulting an official.
The man was stopped near the Aambeeld in Medemblik. He disagreed with this and cycled away via the roadway.
One of the officers followed the cyclist in a car. According to the police, the man became “verbally and physically aggressive” when the officer wanted to talk to him. He assaulted the officer, who brought the suspect under control by using a taser.
The man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an official in the performance of their duty and resisting arrest. The latter means that someone uses violence or the threat of violence to resist an official in the performance of their duty.
The suspect had to take a breathalyzer test, which showed that he was under the influence of alcohol. He is still in custody. The police are looking for witnesses who saw anything of the assault or threat.
