Long-term NPO Radio 1 Program Plastic Will Stop from Next Year

The long-term NPO Radio 1 program Kunststof will stop from 2026. “The makers of Kunststof have taken a great deal of disappointment of the NPO decision to cancel the program on January 1,” writes the NTR.

Plastic may be continued in the form of a podcast. “This offers perspective on continuity, but at the same time raises questions about the impact on visibility, frequency and substantive quality, in particular in the event of a major reduction in the available budget,” the broadcaster reports in a press release.

The NPO wants to renew the programming of Radio 1. In recent months, all broadcasters had the opportunity to sign up for a new program about art, culture, media and sport.

The editors of Plastic tried to adjust the formula of the program so that Sport would also have a place. But the NPO opts for a different interpretation.

Georgina Verbaan has been the new voice of plastic since the beginning of this year. The actress takes care of the introduction of the program and announces the guests.

‘Plastic is a journalistic institute’

Thomas Bruning, secretary of the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), finds it a “short -sighted decision” to get the radio program from the channel. He describes plastic as “a journalistic institute”.

“In times when substantive choices have to be made, the NPO must stick to its public and journalistic mission,” says Bruning. “Choose programs that are distinctive. Plastic is a striking example of this.”

Plastic has been on the radio since 2001. Among other things, the program took home the silver travel microphone and the journalistic prize.
