The music of Suzan & Freek was streamed extra often on Wednesday, the day after it was announced that Freek is terminally ill. The duo appears 22 times in the top 200 of most streamed songs in the Netherlands. That is eight times more often than Tuesday.
Lichtje Branden (Burning Light) is at the top of the Spotify list. Fans had called for that song to be streamed en masse. That was done almost 384,000 times on Wednesday, more than 20,000 times more often than number two ZAAZAA by Frenna and Shallipopi.
It is the first time that a song by Suzan & Freek has topped the Spotify list. All other listings of Suzan & Freek have also risen sharply. Hits like Goud (Gold) and Als Het Avond Is (When It Is Evening) are in fifth and eighth place respectively, and the latest single Batterij (Battery) is in ninth place.
Fans in Flanders are also streaming the duo’s music in large numbers. There, the breakthrough hit Als Het Avond Is is in fourth place and is now the most popular track by Suzan & Freek, followed by Goud in sixth place. Lichtje Branden, which did not yet have a listing in Belgium, is in eighth place. In total, there are fourteen songs by the singing duo in the Belgian list.
Just like in the Netherlands, Suzan & Freek are now also the most streamed act in Belgium. The duo had never before been in the top ten of most listened to artists there.
Suzan & Freek announced on Tuesday at the end of the afternoon that Freek has metastatic lung cancer. They have stopped performing immediately.
