Lay's chips in new box costs much more per chip than in old -fashioned bag

Lay’s is changing its chip packaging, which is drawing a lot of criticism. A chip in the new box-like packaging costs much more than the same snack from a bag.

The new packaging is resealable and sturdy, but is already leading to a lot of commentary. It’s mainly about the new prices.

Lay’s charges 10.87 euros per kilo for Max natural chips in a bag. The same chips in a box cost 19.12 euros per kilo. A kilo of Doritos cheese costs 10.99 euros in a bag and 18.50 euros in a box. The price increase is not immediately apparent in the price per package, because there is a different weight in a so-called snack box than in the different bags.

PepsiCo, the company behind Lay’s chips, is not available for comment. It is unclear whether the bags will disappear completely and where the enormous price increase comes from.

Food producers have been under fire for some time because of inflation and shrinkflation. In the latter case, manufacturers put less food in a package, but charge the same amount for their product.
