BMX rider Laura Smulders won the third World Cup race of the season on Saturday in front of her home crowd at the Papendal sports center.
The 31-year-old from Nijmegen finished ahead of Saya Sakakibara from Australia and Zoé Claessens from Switzerland in the final. Manon Veenstra finished fifth in the final and Judy Baauw seventh.
In the men’s race, the Dutchman Mitchel Schotman took silver at the World Cup race in Papendal. He finished second behind Rico Bearman from New Zealand.
Bearman benefited from crashes by Australian Izaac Kennedy and Dutchman Jaymio Brink in the final corner. Frenchman Sylvain André finished third. Brink still finished fifth.
The World Cup has landed in Papendal this weekend, where the Dutch BMX selection has its own track. A new race for men and women is scheduled for Sunday.
