KPN has installed fiber optic in two thirds of all Dutch homes

KPN has already installed fiber optics in two out of three Dutch homes, the company reported on Wednesday during the presentation of its quarterly figures. The telecom company aims to connect 80 percent of all homes to its fiber optic network by the end of next year.

A fiber optic cable from KPN or Glaspoort already runs through the street in 66 percent of all homes in the Netherlands. This amounts to 5.5 million homes. Approximately 4.3 million homes are already actually connected to KPN’s fiber optic network.

KPN itself installs fiber optics in urban areas. Glaspoort does this in smaller residential areas and rural areas. Glaspoort is a joint venture between KPN and pension fund APG.

KPN wants to have fiber optics in the street at 80 percent of all homes in our country by the end of next year. It will probably take a while before all those homes are actually connected to the fiber optic network.

KPN shared the figures on its fiber optic rollout on Wednesday during the presentation of its quarterly figures for the second quarter. These figures show that more than 1.9 million households use KPN’s fiber optic connection. That is 160,000 more than last year.

In the second quarter, 922,000 households still used the copper line (the old-fashioned telephone line). This means a decrease of 147,000 households compared to a year earlier. KPN’s fiber optic network is intended to eventually replace the more than one hundred-year-old telephone network.

KPN further reports a quarterly turnover of almost 1.5 billion euros. That is 5.8 percent more than in the second quarter of last year.

Despite the increased turnover, profit fell by 7.6 percent to 210 million euros. According to the company, this decrease was caused by one-off costs.
