High traffic jams on European roads, 'Gigantic crowds' on Autoroute du Soleil

Vacationers should expect significant traffic jams on roads to their holiday destinations in the south. This is according to traffic information from the ANWB.

Vacationers on the Autoroute du Soleil (A7) between Lyon and Avignon are experiencing significant delays. “The entire A7 is currently extremely busy. The delay is up to hours,” says an ANWB spokesperson to NU.nl.

Further south, on the A9 from Montpellier towards the Spanish border, the delay is an hour. “That is almost always the case on days like these,” the spokesperson reports.

On the A2 before the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland, there is a traffic jam of 10 kilometers in the southern direction. This leads to a delay of an hour.

Vacation traffic also faces significant delays at the Karawanken Tunnel on the border of Austria and Slovenia. In Italy, there is a one-hour traffic jam on the A14 between Bologna and Imola. On the B179 from Germany to Austria at the Fern Pass, the delay is more than an hour.

This year, Black Saturday falls on August 2, but the ANWB expects a lot of traffic on these routes every Saturday in the coming period. The French determine the official Black Saturday: many Parisians then go on vacation. “On that day, it will certainly be extremely busy heading south,” says the spokesperson.

The ANWB also expects traffic on the A1 and A7 towards Hamburg in Germany in the coming period. “People traveling to Denmark or taking the boat to Scandinavia use those roads.”
