As stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive and incurable nerve disease. The nerves that control the muscles are further damaged and eventually stop functioning. This gives patients more and more difficulty walking, talking, eating and breathing.
“My left side functions, but my right side has completely stopped working,” says the actor. Dane also notices that his left arm is becoming weaker. “I think I can no longer use my left hand in a few months.”
Dane started to show the first symptoms of the disease a year and a half ago. “I didn’t think much about it then,” he says. “I thought I might have applied too much if my hand had overloaded, but a few weeks later it got worse.”
Dane could be seen from 2006 to 2012 as Mark Sloan, also known as ‘McSteamy’, in the Gray’s Anatomy series. He also plays one of the main roles in the HBO series Euphoria .
