Gouda Hospital is rid of fruit flies, deleted operations are overtaken

The Groene Hart Hospital in Gouda can perform all operations again from Monday. On Friday, the hospital had to delete forty non-emerging operations due to fruit flies in the operating rooms. Emergency operations continued.

The hospital announces on Sunday that the outbreak of fruit flies is under control. No more flies were found in the operating rooms. All spaces in the operating complex have been cleaned again and fruit fly traps have been placed everywhere.

The fruit flies had probably come to fruit residues that were “unconsciously” left in adjacent spaces of the operating rooms. Fruit flies can increase the risk of wound infections after surgery.

Most missed operations have since been scheduled again, according to the hospital. “We understand that it was annoying for patients whose operation was postponed last Friday.”
