Goes still with the Dutch Juniors to European Championship, AZ'er replaces injured Youri Baas

Wouter Goes will still join Jong Oranje for the European Championship in Slovakia. The AZ defender is the replacement for the injured Ajax player Youri Baas, as announced by the KNVB on Friday.

Goes was initially left out of coach Michael Reiziger’s selection. Rav van den Berg (Middlesbrough), Ryan Flamingo (PSV), and Neraysho Kasanwirjo (Rangers FC) were preferred over the AZ player.

Now, a spot has become available in the 23-man selection. Baas had already missed the last league matches for Ajax due to injury. The European Championship is now also too early for the left-footed defender.

Goes has played four international matches for Jong Oranje so far. He made his debut in March 2024 against Norway.

Earlier on Friday, there was already a change in the selection of Jong Oranje. FC Groningen standout Luciano Valente, reportedly on his way to Feyenoord, is replacing the injured NEC midfielder Dirk Proper.

Jong Oranje starts the European Championship on Thursday, June 12, with a match against Finland. Denmark and Ukraine are the other opponents in the group stage. If they reach the quarter-finals, they will face France, Portugal, Poland, or Georgia.
