GL-PvdA wants weaponboycot against Israel, MPs reacted upset

MPs have responded with dismay to a motion in which GL-PvdA MP Kati Piri calls for a weapon boycott against Israel. The entire room will be called on Thursday evening to vote on this motion and a motion that calls in not to enter such a arms embargo.

Piri called it a “Devil’s dilemma” for her party. Yet GL-PVDA calls on a motion for a stop on the export of parts for the Iron Dome air defense system.

According to the party, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu uses the air defense system not only for defense, but it also attacks Iran. “It is now being used as a weapon strategy. That brings us to this decision.”

The motion caused a lot of unrest in the room. Among others, MPs Eric van der Burg (VVD) and Don Ceder (CU) pointed out that such a stop has serious consequences for the safety of the Israeli population.

“An indefensible Israel means that Iran can fire unlimited rockets and that the Iranian regime can implement the main objective, namely the destruction of Israel,” Van der Burg warned.

VVD, NSC and CU come with counter motion

According to Piri, it is not the intention to make Israel defenseless. She repeated that the Netanyahu government, which is indeed intended to defend rocket attacks, abused the Iron Dome as an attack weapon when Iran was attacked with ballistic missiles on Friday.

According to her, Israel could never have been able to do that if it could not have protected its own population against the inevitable retribution by the Iranian regime. “I hope he will repent,” Piri said about Netanyahu.

NSC MP Isa Kahraman said he was “really shocked” of the motion that Piri had submitted just before. The proposal had already been discussed in a commission debate on Thursday morning, but “I hoped it was a talk”.

With Van der Burg and Ceder, Kahraman submitted a counter -motion to continue to allow delivery of the radar parts that it is all about.
