In the provinces of Gelderland, Limburg, and Noord-Brabant, code orange applies on Tuesday and Wednesday due to extreme heat. In the south, maximum temperatures of up to 38 degrees are possible, and it will remain warm at night. The KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) urges people to take the heat into account.
In the rest of the country, code yellow applies. There are also tropical temperatures there, but not as high as in the three provinces where it is code orange. Code yellow has been in effect for the entire country since Monday morning.
The KNMI has issued code orange for the southeast of the country to make people aware of the possible consequences of the extreme heat. People can experience complaints such as dehydration and overheating. The risk of such complaints is greater for the elderly or people with vulnerable health.
Residents are advised to stay out of the sun and drink enough water. Heavy physical exertion is not recommended between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. The KNMI also calls on people to pay attention to people in the area with vulnerable health. Family members and acquaintances can help them by keeping their house cool and making sure they continue to drink enough.
With code orange, the KNMI also warns of possible other consequences. The persistent heat can cause nuisance at home and in the office. It is also possible that roads will be closed due to melting asphalt. In addition, the track can expand due to the heat, which may cause train delays.
In the south above 35 degrees
Temperatures above 35 degrees are expected in the southern half of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday. Locally it can even be 38 degrees. In the rest of the country there are also tropical temperatures, but it remains at 30 to 34 degrees.
It remains warm at night, with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees in the southeast. Such temperatures can make the night uncomfortable for people, says weatherman Albert Snoek from Weerplaza. “As a person, it is difficult to find a cool place. That can make it difficult for you to fall asleep.”
For the temperatures at night there is a difference between urban area and the countryside. It cools down a bit more in the countryside, but in the cities the temperature can remain around 25 degrees at night. This does not only apply to the cities in the south of the country, but also to, for example, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
