From Sunday afternoon code yellow throughout the country for heavy thunderstorms and hail

The KNMI has issued a code yellow weather warning for Sunday afternoon and evening. This warning applies to the entire country. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected. There may also be significant hail and wind.

The thunderstorms will move across the country from the southwest on Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the KNMI. The institute estimates that these storms will last approximately two hours. The warning is currently in effect from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The severe thunderstorms may cause flooding in some areas. Branches may also break off “due to a temporarily rapidly increasing wind.”

The storms may be accompanied by gusts of wind of 60 kilometers per hour. Hailstones up to 2 centimeters in size may also fall. In some places, 30 millimeters of rain may fall within an hour.

Code yellow due to showers is issued when there is a chance of nuisance and damage around and in the house, such as flooding of basements and gardens.

Road traffic may also experience disruption. Due to the heavy rainfall, water may remain on the road surface. This creates a risk of aquaplaning. This means that the tires lose contact with the road surface, making the vehicle uncontrollable.

During thunderstorms, the Red Cross advises you to stay indoors. Additionally, showering is not advisable. We explain why in the article below.
