Former Orange-international Dick Schneider died at the age of 77

Former Oranje international Dick Schneider has passed away. ‘Knakkie’, as his nickname was, was 77 years old.

Schneider mainly made a name for himself during his career at Go Ahead Eagles and Feyenoord. He also wore the shirt of Vitesse, FC Zutphen and FC Wageningen and played eleven international matches for the Dutch national team.

He participated in the only international match ever in De Adelaarshorst. During that match against Iceland, the Netherlands was awarded a penalty and the public wanted Schneider to take the ball. Johan Cruijff placed the ball down, after which Schneider took the penalty and scored.

At that time, Schneider was under contract with Feyenoord, the club with which he won the national title twice and the UEFA Cup once. He played three periods at Go Ahead Eagles.

After his active career, Schneider was briefly the football director at Go Ahead Eagles. Even after that period, he continued to follow the club closely. ‘Knakkie’ regularly visited the training sessions and was a regular guest at Go Ahead’s home matches.
