Daniil Medvedev was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday. The former world number one lost 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3) and 6-2 to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, marking his third consecutive disappointing Grand Slam tournament.
Last year, Medvedev reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, but this year the Russian is performing very poorly. He lost in the second round at the Australian Open, in the first round at Roland Garros, and now Wimbledon is also immediately over for him.
The 29-year-old Medvedev is currently ranked number nine in the world and was also seeded ninth at Wimbledon. Due to his early elimination, the 2021 US Open winner will fall out of the top ten. In 2022, Medvedev was the number one for sixteen weeks.
Bonzi is the world number 64. This is his first time in the second round of Wimbledon since 2022.
The best Grand Slam performance ever by the 29-year-old Bonzi is reaching the third round, twice at the Australian Open and once at the US Open.
Two-time Wimbledon finalist Jabeur gives up
In the women’s division, the curtain fell for two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur. The thirty-year-old tennis player from Tunisia had to give up in her first-round match against Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova with an injury, trailing 6-7 (5) and 0-2.
Jabeur, the former world number two, has dropped to 59th place in the world rankings due in part to injuries.
Jabeur reached the final at Wimbledon in 2022 and 2023, losing to Jelena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova respectively. Jabeur also lost the final of the US Open in 2022.
