Ellen van Dijk has suffered a fractured shoulder in her fall on Thursday in the Ronde van Lekkerkerk. The cyclist does not require surgery at this time, according to her team Lidl-Trek.
The 38-year-old Van Dijk crashed hard after an hour on Ascension Day. The veteran was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Research has shown that she has suffered a fracture in her right shoulder.
It is still unclear how long Van Dijk will be out of action. “If there are new updates, we will release them. We will announce a possible date of return when we have a view on that,” her team Lidl-Trek writes on Friday.
Van Dijk participated in the Vuelta a EspaƱa earlier this month. The former world time trial champion wore the leader’s jersey in the second stage after being the first rider from Lidl-Trek to cross the finish line in the team time trial.
The Ronde van Lekkerkerk was canceled after Van Dijk’s fall. In addition to Van Dijk, many other big names participated in the criterium, such as Lucinda Brand, Marianne Vos and Anna van der Breggen.
