Demolition parking garage Nieuwegein can start year after collapse

A year after a part of the parking garage of the St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein collapsed, the municipality has given permission to clear the debris. The cause of the incident is still unknown.

The hospital reports on Monday that the municipality has approved an amended demolition plan submitted by garage owner Primevest. The hospital regrets that the restoration of the garage is taking so long.

According to the hospital, preparatory work, which will take more than two weeks, can now start soon. After that, the remnants of the collapsed ramps must be removed. These are heavy pieces of debris that are partly attached to the garage.

Subsequently, it will be investigated whether the construction of the garage has been damaged and how it can be fully restored. According to the hospital, Primevest aims to put the parking garage back into use before the end of the year.

The six-story garage collapsed on May 26 last year. There were no casualties, but a large part of the care in the hospital came to a standstill. The Dutch Safety Board (OVV) is still investigating the cause of the collapse.
