Caspar Corbeau won the bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the World Long Course Swimming Championships in Singapore on Friday with a personal best. The 24-year-old American-Dutch swimmer passed two competitors in the final meters.

Corbeau finished in a personal best of 2:07.73. His previous record was 2:07.90, which he set during the Olympic Games in Paris, where he also won bronze.

China’s Qin Haiyang won gold in 2:07.41. Japan’s Ippei Watanabe took silver (2:07.70).

Corbeau dramatically missed out on the world title last year. He relinquished a significant lead in the final meters, allowing China’s Dong Zhihao to claim the world title. Corbeau had to settle for silver.

This time, Corbeau was in fifth place with 50 meters to go. Thanks to a strong comeback, he managed to reach the podium for the second World Championships in a row.

Earlier in the day, Marrit Steenbergen retained the world title in the 100-meter freestyle. The 25-year-old from Friesland swam to her second individual World Championship medal in 52.55 seconds. In total, the Netherlands has won three medals in Singapore so far. The World Championships will last until Sunday.
