In July, nearly 29,000 new cars were registered, a 9 percent increase compared to the previous year. This is only the second month this year that more cars have been sold than in the same period of 2024.
An increase was only seen in May as well, when there was a plus of 7 percent. This is according to figures from industry associations BOVAG and RAI Vereniging and data collector RDC.
The increase in July was mainly due to hybrid models, which continue to gain market share. More than half (51.8 percent) of the cars sold last month were hybrids. That is 5 percentage points more than a year earlier.
Hybrids are cars that can run on both fossil fuels and electricity. This includes vehicles that can be charged with a plug – the plug-in hybrids – and models without a plug, the battery of which is charged by, for example, braking energy.
The sale of fully electric cars is growing much less rapidly. The market share of 31 percent in July is only 0.2 percentage points higher than last year. The collapsed sales of Tesla do not help. In July, 443 units were registered, compared to 1,161 last year.
The sale of Teslas in our country has been in a dip for some time. This is partly due to the political activities of CEO Elon Musk, with which he has not made himself popular with everyone. Sales of Tesla models have also fallen sharply in many other European countries in recent months.
