Billy Joel in documentary frank about suicide attempts: 'Had a lot of pain'

In his new documentary Billy Joel : And So It Goes, Billy Joel talks frankly about the darkest period of his life. In it he made two attempts to put an end to his life and was in a coma.

The suicide attempts were the result of a complicated love triangle with the wife of one of his former band members. The 76-year-old singer says he felt guilty about the affair.

The emotional aftermath of that time made sure that the mental health of Joel was getting worse. “I had no place to live. I slept in laundries and I was depressed. I think I was almost psychotic.”

He remembers that he had reached a low point and felt hopelessly: “I just thought I would put an end to it. I was in a lot of pain, and tomorrow would be just like today.”

Joel’s sister, Judy Molinari, gave him sleeping pills to help him rest. Only the singer swallowed all the pills, so he was in a coma for days. His sister says emotionally: “He was white there like a sheet. I thought I had killed him.” After his attempt had failed, the singer tried to rob herself again later by drinking a bottle of cleaning agent.

After the suicide attempts, the singer felt a “lost soul” and Joel was admitted to an observation department. “When I left the observation department, I thought to myself: you can use all those emotions for new music,” says Joel.

The two -part documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes recently premiered during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The singer recently announced for the time being to delete all his performances because he is struggling with a brain disorder.
