Archeologists have found enormous leather shoes at a Roman excavation in England. The shoes were Dutch sizes 48 to 50, which is exceptionally large for that time.
The shoes are approximately two thousand years old. They were found in a defensive ditch near the Roman fort Magna in the Northumberland district of Northern England, BBC News writes.
The longest shoe that was found was 32.6 centimeters long, which is about size 50 in the Netherlands. In total, 32 shoes were excavated, eight of which were larger than 30 centimeters.
The size of the shoes is, according to the archeologists, “a mystery.” It is possible that the inhabitants had larger feet and were taller than average at that time, but that is not yet certain.
Further research should reveal why the leather shoes are so large. An analysis should give more clarity about who lived in that area and what their physical characteristics were. The shoes are so well preserved because the oxygen concentration in the soil is low.
