In Curaçao, several victims fell within a week after attacks by aggressive bees. A 62-year-old man died after such an attack. A dog and a parrot were also killed after bee stings.
The man was attacked when he wanted to clean a site in the east of the island. His colleague survived the attack by fleeing in a home.
Local media now report that the police “have their hands full” of reports about bees attacks. Last Wednesday the police would have been called from three different locations on the island in connection with such attacks. The police on the island have given guidelines to the population on how to deal with such attacks.
The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature has spread a warning. It states that “bees only become aggressive when their nest is threatened”. The government advises people who find a bee nest not to disturb the insects, leave the place immediately and not try to kill the bees or wipe off the body.
Local beekeepers fear that experimentation has been made with crossing different bee species. As a result, there would be more aggressive bees on the island. Beekeepers find it striking that smoke clouds, which were effective in the past to expel bees, no longer seem to work in recent incidents.
